The journey through midlife and menopause is one of the most profound — and misunderstood — transitions in a woman’s life. Far more than a medical event marked by hormonal changes, this stage carries deep emotional, psychological, and spiritual significance that our culture has largely forgotten.
In a recent conversation with midlife mentor Debs De Vries, we explored how menopause is less of an ending and more of an initiation — a portal into greater authenticity, wisdom, and soul power.
The “Underworld Journey” of Peri-menopause and Menopause
Debs describes midlife as a mythological descent, much like Persephone’s journey into the underworld. Rather than a punishment, this descent is an initiation. As she explains:
“The invitation is to go into the underworld, to become Persephone, to face the demons and to reemerge in such a way that we’re expanded. We have greater capacity.”
Seen through this lens, experiences like brain fog, hot flushes, and emotional shifts aren’t deficiencies to be medicated away, but signals that the body and brain are recalibrating for a new phase of consciousness. Just as adolescence prunes and rewires the brain, peri-menopause is an alchemical process of transformation — helping women shed outdated patterns and make space for their next evolution.
Astrology and the Cycles of Midlife
Astrology adds another layer of wisdom to the midlife transition:
Around age 44, the Uranus opposition arrives, urging women to break free from limitations and old identities.
By age 48–50, the Chiron return brings opportunities for deep healing of childhood wounds.
These cosmic cycles align beautifully with the biological transitions of menopause, underscoring that this is not simply a reproductive shutdown but a spiritual rebirth.
Breaking Free from Cultural Conditioning
One of the greatest challenges women face is cultural conditioning. From our first periods, many of us were taught to hide or dismiss our cycles — to be “presentable” and push through, rather than honour our rhythms. This suppression breeds shame where there should be reverence.
Debs highlights how reconnecting with cyclical wisdom allows us to reclaim midlife as a sacred process rather than a medical problem to be managed.
The Voice, the Vulva, and the Vagus
In her book The Voice, the Vulva and the Vagus, Debs explains the profound connection between the vagus nerve, our creative centre, and our authentic voice. Together, these form a biological and energetic “technology” that enables divine inspiration to flow into creative expression.
This is why, in midlife, many women feel a deep pull to finally speak their truth, create from the heart, and live authentically. It’s not random — it’s the body and spirit working together to birth a new phase of life.
Midlife as a Portal of Power
For women in peri-menopause or menopause, the message is clear: you are not broken. The dismantling of old identities is what allows your true essence to emerge.
Midlife is not about decline — it’s about awakening. By embracing your body’s intelligence, honouring your cycles, and trusting the spiritual process, you step into a new level of wisdom, creativity, and purpose that was always your birthright.
