Why You Don’t Know Who You Are (And How to Fix It)

How do you learn to trust yourself when you’ve spent years living by someone else’s rules?

Toni LaMotta joined a Catholic convent at 17 and spent 16 years living under a vow of obedience. When she left at 33, she realised she didn’t even know something as simple as what colour sofa she liked.

That decision began a life of questioning, change and reinvention that has taken Toni through faith, ministry, academia, technology, business and coaching. Now 80, she’s still learning, growing and challenging the idea that there comes an age when we’re supposed to stop evolving.

In this episode of The Midlife Rebel Podcast, Toni and I talk about what it takes to develop an inner compass, trust your own voice and question the conditioning and expectations that have shaped your life.

We explore:

• What Toni learned from 16 years living under a vow of obedience
• The courage to question rules and beliefs you’ve inherited
• How we lose touch with what we actually want
• Learning to trust your own inner guidance
• The Enneagram as a tool for understanding motivation
• Journalling and recognising the stepping stones of your life
• Working with fear, conditioning and old patterns
• Reinventing yourself in midlife and beyond
• Why personal growth doesn’t have an expiry date

Toni’s story is a wonderful reminder that we’re never really finished becoming who we are. We can question the old rules, change direction and continue discovering new parts of ourselves at any age.

Because there’s a little bit of rebel in all of us.
