Breaking Free: My Midlife Sobriety Story and the Power of Coming Home to Myself

For years, I lived what looked like the picture of health. I was a CrossFit Games athlete, a personal trainer, a mum, and someone others saw as strong and disciplined. But behind closed doors, I was quietly wrestling with something that didn’t align with any of that—alcohol. This is the story of how I broke free from drinking in midlife, and how that decision became the most powerful act of self-discovery I’ve ever made.

I recently shared my journey on the Me & My Wellness podcast with Anthony Hartcher, and we went deep. I talked about the moment I realised I could no longer keep showing up for others—my clients, my kids, my community—without being honest with myself. My decision to quit drinking wasn’t about hitting a dramatic rock bottom. It was about choosing to be the kind of leader and mother I aspired to be.

Why I Quit Drinking in Midlife

As someone in her 40s, navigating sobriety alongside the emotional and hormonal changes of perimenopause, I came to see how many women are silently struggling. We look like we’re coping, but we feel ashamed. Alcohol was never the solution—it just numbed the call to evolve.

Books like The 30-Day Alcohol Experiment helped me reframe my relationship with alcohol. And a previous guest, Sarah Rusbatch, who's a Grey Area Drinking Coach had previously shared some valuable insights with me that were helpful in my journey.

Sobriety as a Portal to Self-Discovery

Giving up alcohol forced me to get honest. It was like stripping away a layer that had kept me from facing certain truths—about my emotions, my habits, my fears, and my true desires. I started asking deeper questions and realised I had been living on autopilot in some areas of my life. Through my podcast Life, Health, and the Universe, I created a space for those questions to live, breathe, and be explored with others on their own healing journeys.

Sobriety became a mirror, reflecting back not just what I wanted to heal, but what I wanted to build. I began living with more intention—leaning into creativity, conversation, and community. What surprised me most is how many people reached out to say, “Me too.” That’s when I realised this wasn’t just my story. It’s a shared experience for so many midlife women who are quietly questioning their relationship with alcohol—and with themselves.

The Power of Community and Conscious Connection

I hope that telling my story has helped others find the courage to tell theirs. And I believe that’s where real healing begins: in honest storytelling, in safe community, in the decision to choose clarity over coping.

If you're sober-curious, navigating midlife changes, or supporting someone who is—know this: you're not alone, and there’s nothing wrong with you. Sobriety isn’t about restriction—it’s about liberation. It’s about remembering who you are and choosing to come home to that version of you.

If My Story Resonates With You…

I invite you to listen to the full podcast episode. We cover practical tips, emotional truths, and the messy middle of transformation. This isn’t a highlight reel. It’s real life, and it’s powerful. And if you’re on the brink of change—whether it’s sobriety, self-discovery, or simply wanting more—you don’t have to do it alone.
