Peace as a Life Skill: Reframing Calm, Connection, and Inner Strength in Midlife

When you hear the word peace, what comes to mind? For many of us—especially women raised in the post-60s era—the image might involve flower crowns, anti-war protests, or "hippie culture." But what if peace is something far more practical, powerful, and personal?

In a recent episode of Life, Health & The Universe, sociologist and peace educator Reba Parker invited us to reimagine peace not as a lofty ideal, but as a daily, learnable life skill.

Moving Beyond the Myths: What Peace Really Means

After teaching her Sociology of Peace course more than 100 times at the College of Charleston, Reba discovered something surprising: most students associated peace with outdated or superficial ideas. When asked what the peace sign meant to them, the most common answers were “hippies” and “flower power.” Very few connected it to safety, emotional wellbeing, or authentic connection.

This disconnect sparked Reba’s development of what she calls the “Peaceability Mindset”—a practical framework for cultivating peace in our bodies, homes, and communities.

Peaceability: A Learnable Practice for Modern Women

Reba defines peaceability as “the ability to do peace.” It’s not about striving for perfection or a utopian fantasy. Instead, it’s about recognising peace as a spectrum we move along every day. Every conversation, boundary, and choice either builds a culture of peace—or contributes to one of disconnection or harm.

This reframe is especially resonant for midlife women, who are often navigating major life transitions—such as menopause, divorce, caregiving, or career pivots. Reba’s work offers tools to not just cope with these changes, but to cultivate inner calm, resilience, and empowered communication.

The Three Ingredients of Peace

At the heart of Reba’s model is a simple but transformative formula:

  • Safety – creating environments (internal and external) where we feel physically and emotionally secure

  • Well-being – fostering growth, creativity, and fulfilment

  • Interconnectedness – recognising our deep relational ties to others and the Earth

When these three elements are present, we can access what Reba calls “that place where you can say, it is well with my soul.”

From Fear to Freedom: Reba’s Personal Transformation

This isn’t just theory—Reba lived it. She shares her journey from an abusive relationship, where fear was a daily reality, to consciously creating a home she now describes as “a 9.3 out of 10” on the peace scale. Her tools? Nonviolent communication, empathetic listening, and conflict resolution techniques—what she calls “essential peace practices for the modern world.”

For women healing from trauma or navigating emotionally charged relationships, these skills offer a grounded, practical path to emotional wellness and relational harmony.

Peace Beyond the Personal: A Call to Conscious Connection

Reba also expands the idea of peace to include our relationship with the planet. Rather than dominating nature, she invites us to adopt a more reciprocal and respectful view—one informed by Indigenous wisdom and the long view of considering seven generations ahead.

This perspective shift is deeply aligned with the values of many women in midlife: sustainability, stewardship, and living in harmony with what truly matters.

Peace as the New Frontier for Wellbeing

In a world overwhelmed by conflict and constant stimulation, Reba’s peaceability mindset offers a refreshing and empowering reframe:
Peace isn’t passive. It’s powerful.
It’s not the absence of something—it’s the presence of safety, wellness, and connection.

For midlife women ready to step into a new season of life with more calm, clarity, and conscious intention, this approach may just be the missing piece.
